I guess you will spend the new few years paying your hospital bill in installments? Bupa hasn't been involved in Ireland for many months now its been taken over by Quinn Healthcare? If its a pre-existing condition then any health insurance company are quite within their rights to not pay up. Its clearly stated on the forms when you join up. Surely you knew this before you went in for surgery?

DON'T PAY. We should have a free universal healthcare system in this country. It's everybody's basic human right to have access to proper healthcare. What kind of barbarism advocates a system where the rich get treatment and the poor are left to rot because they can't afford to see a GP or they're put on a long waiting list, which by the time they've been seen, their condition is worse? It's about time we dismantled our two-tier health system for once and for all!

You are not alone. Make an appointment with MABS. Google it. (Money Advice and Budgeting Service which is a government agency to help sort out debts - act as your advocate and negotiate with creditors/BUPA. Because of the current economic climate there is about a six week waiting list. Bring all relevant in and outgoing expenditure with you. Don't wait for the court order?

As it is a pre existing condition, as another answerer put it, they are well within their rights not to pay, however you will have to come up with some solution to pay the fees. Either by installements, or another loan. Either way, the bill will have to be paid. Should you choose to bury your head in the sand and hope it will go away, the hospital will begin proceedings, which will involve further costs and a possible judgment against you. A judgment will prevent you from EVER getting any form of loan. Advise? Arrange something to discharge the fee.
