How expensive is it REALLY to live in Galway, Ireland

How expensive is it REALLY to live in Galway, Ireland?
As a prospective traveler and possible american immigrate to Ireland I am wondering how expensive it REALLY is to live in a place like Galway. I intend on applying for a hotel manager position in local hotels in Galway, but before I do I want to know what I'm really getting myself into and whether I can honestly make a comfortable living in Galway. If you could possibly give me a round about answer on how expensive the typical apartment is in Galway that would be great. What is it like in Galway? Are the people relatively friendly and accepting of all types of people? What's the climate like? How different is irish culture from american culture?

Galway is not that expensive. The accomodation is cheap to rent. To buy in the city is a little more expensive than the county. Traffic congestion is heavy depending on certain factors. However Galway is relativly easy to walk around. Galway apartments can range from 400+ euros per month. Check out the accomodation pages at www.galwayadvertiser.ie. Be warned if you want accomodation in the summer months you have to be quick as students in galway put a demand on the accomodation during the summer months. Galway is a friendly city, crime is there but still safe. I think we have had 1 murder this year and that was front page news. The night life is great and the people are tolerant. The large student population means that there is always a lot to do and a large population of different cultures. Climate is a typical north atlantic climate that is similar to seattle. It can rain alot but on the plus side it is never to warm and never too cold. Irish culture is different to american culture, but you will find that there are no complexities to irish culture that wont be hard to understand. One difference is the hiberno english, sayings and phrases might be a little confusing at first but you will understand it quickly. Heres an example. "Thats as usefull as tits on a bull". A great saying when you want to imply that something is of no use whatsoever

Galway is a great town. I lived there for over 2 years. Accommodation is relatively cheap in comparison to Dublin or other European cities. My house (which i shared with 3 other guys) cost me only 40 euro a week and this was only last year. Apartments in town cost 100euro+ a week. Sharing a house (ie you will have your own room and shower) is the best way to go. You get to know people quicker that way. There are some beautiful shared houses to rent on the east and west sides of the city for about 75euro a week. Despite being a small city (<100,000 people), Galway has everything you could ask for in terms of shopping, entertainment, nightlife etc. The people are really friendly and there are so many americans living in galway (many going to the university) that you will feel right at home. The Irish and american culture are similiar. All western societies seem pretty much the same to me, i doubt you will see much of a difference. Outside of galway city itself the pace of life will be much slower than what you may be used to back home though. the climate in galway is pretty mild. I am not sure what part of america you are from but the climate is almost identical to that of the states of Oregon and Washington. The summer can be warm but it rarely gets above 80 degrees or below 30 degrees fahrenheit at any time here. Expect to see alot of rain though, parts of Ireland experience rain 200 days in the year.

6 :

7 :
Dublin or Cork
8 :

9 :
Well its hard to advise really it depends what you like doing and where you are going to work if you are working? I live in a very small town in Co Cork and there is nothing to do really apart from go to pubs which are too expensive so we don't go out much. No gym or swimming pool, nothing social goes on really apart from Church stuff, there is nothing for the kids to do in the evenings.

Well, I live in Dublin and there are hardly any bugs! I leave beside the sea, near a place called Malahide. It's a nice place to live, there aren't many commoners :) Hope this helps! :) Rachel x
2 :
Here in North Cork we have lots of bugs especially midges which are tiny gnats which you can hardly see but which bite you and it itches straight away. Best you go to Dublin to live.
3 :
I am from Dublin. It all depends on what you need. For example if you are into Business and want to promote it you should live in Dublin and if you are rich you should live in somewhere like Howth or Malahide but if you are like the rest of us well then you should live somewhere that is nice. If you want to live in the country I would suggest Wicklow as it is lovely. I would advise you to have a car cause you can travel anywhere in the country within hours. Hope this helps. P.s you should get UPC tv and broadband as it is great cause Ireland has great broadband. Google and Facebook HQs for Europe are here in Dublin. Best of Luck.
4 :
Your best bet is to live in Dublin !
5 :
I think the nicest place to live would be Galway City. I have often holidayed there and I loved it!!
6 :
Ireland is quite small, so there is not a lot of difference in the wildlife from one part to another. Also there really aren't very many bugs in Ireland, and the ones we have are quite small. For the least amount of bugs, you should live in one of the cities, like Cork or Dublin. By the way, you're moving to Ireland so I assume you have a place in mind anyway? Why is the amount of bugs one of your criteria for where you want to live? If you have a phobia, I suggest you go to a psychologist for support. Bugs (particularly in Ireland) are harmless, your fear has a bigger impact.

Haha, I just noticed that.
2 :
Not many...Id love to see a black leprachun with a Irish accent, though. I can't really even picture that.
3 :
"if any" Are you broken?
4 :
1.1% of the people in Ireland are black. That is about 45,700 people. See article below about black people in Ireland.
5 :
THey do in the northern British part but not in southern Ireland. Wrong color of skin religion etc. Orla Nearly every answer agreed with me yet you personalise it again . ! Edna is the only black person on this site. Interesting ?
6 :
Hi Its really bad here at the minute. We don't actually allow black people to live in Ireland, they have to stay on an island off the coast and we send them out food once a week. I think they enjoy themselves out there...... Can i ask....are you American.
7 :
There are a few. tyrelstown in dublin, for example is mostly inhabited by the nigerian community. But otherwise, there are way more Eastern Europeans (Although more and more decide to go back to their own countries, now that theres very few jobs) asians, and a small french community in dublin.
8 :
As usual Alan M hasn't a clue ... While there aren't a huge number of black people living here, I see them in larger towns and cities now, they have become part of the community. I am sure that there are some black kids playing on GAA teams now too - why not? If they love the sports and enjoy playing them.
9 :
of course there are black people in ireland
10 :
As Charlie said there are quite a few black people in the south of Ireland probably significantly more than in the North. Alan M, so the northern "British" are far more tolerant of other races are they? Those loyalists in Sandy Row didn't seem to get on to well with those Romanians last year did they? Not to mention that various loyalist groups have had connections with far-right groups and neo-Nazis in Britain Once again keep up the hilarity.
11 :
I don't have exact numbers but there are all over Ireland..one of my son's best friends where we live his parents are from Kenya but he was born here & his mum & I are good friends also.... I don't go around counting them to be honest.... I do think people integrate well here though...& before anyone says Irish people are racist, one of that boys friends said to my son when he was going into his friends house 'no whites allowed in here'.shocked me that was said to my son.... & when I do see that boys mum I will say it to her as am sure if it was the other way around they would be claiming racism...
12 :
There is black people all over Ireland north south east and west i know a few who play for local GAA teams in the north here. Anal m produces another classic answer " its the way he tells them". @anal m if i was black it would be better than being orange
13 :
If any?? Are you a troll or just stupid?
14 :
I don't know why everyone is saying this is a stupid question. I live in a town in the South east and to be honest might not see a black person for weeks at a time. You could walk around the town any Saturday and not see any.
15 :
Thousands . Dublin now has it's own Little Africa, and China Town, and Romanians, Poles, Asians, Arabs etc, are all part of our society now. We are a multicultural country. You are American right ?
16 :
The Irish Census of 2006 shows there were 3,559,384 Irish people and 612,629 from other countries here on Census night, making a total of 4,172,013. http://www.cso.ie/statistics/placebirthagegroup.htm That 612,629 included 42,764 from Africa and 55,628 from Asia, which includes many darker coloured people from India, Pakistan and Bangladesh as well as oriental people. There were 38,301 from America, but the statistics don't tell us their skin colour. In 2010 the numbers are probably higher.
17 :
14,603 I counted them all myself
