I want to be a science teacher, what do you need to get into American college's (exam results etc.) and if you go to college in Ireland to be a science teacher, can you work in American High Schools?

http://www.collegeboard.com/student/apply/the-application/43.html http://www.collegeboard.com/student/apply/the-application/49.html Really consider the cost though! State schools and community colleges are the cheapest, but it's still more expensive for international students (relative to in-state residents). At my school (a public/state university), the tuition is $8,416 for those who live in-state and $24,831 for out-of-state students! If you go to college in Ireland I'm sure you could work in the US, I had many foreign teachers in high school. Get certified in whichever state you'd like to teach in http://gradschool.about.com/od/education/f/certif.htm

HI Clodangh, If you want to teach science and study in the US then you need to enter an American college / university with a strong background in science and math. Plus for admission you will need to take either the SAT or ACT along with taking TOEFL. Some schools, particularly on the east coast, may only accept the SAT. However generally speaking most schools will accept either ACT or SAT but if you are in doubt then check with the school. Regarding TOEFL some schools will require it because you did not graduate from a US high school and this requirement is regardless if you were attending a school where the classes where taught in English. Final point, if you are looking at admission for the 2011 / 2012 school year you may find that you are too late for some schools since their deadline may have already passed or their deadline will come before your able to take the admission test. Also you may find that your student visa may be approved after classes start since a US student visa can take a long time to get. Moving on to your next question, can you work as a science teacher in America if you studied in Ireland? The answer to this question is an "it depends" and it depends on the state that you want to teach in Department of Education requirements for teacher certification. Generally speaking, it is possible it would be recognized especially if you had at least 5 years teaching experience in Ireland but the final determination rest with the state that you are making the application. The state has several options at its disposal. One option maybe to grant you a temporary certification that will allow you to get the additional work and education to teach in that state. However the state may decide not to recognize your teaching experience in Ireland and require you to take the education courses necessary to teach. Another option is for you to get your MAT (Master of Arts in Teaching) with certification in the US. MAT programs can have an option to convert non-teaching degrees or foreign certification into teaching degrees. Moreover you need to contact the program to be sure that the degree leads to certification. Best advice I can give to you is to do your research and to contact the states' Department of Education that you are interested in teaching for find out their requirements for teachers trained in a foreign country. Then from there you can decide what is the best route for you to follow. My final advice would be to contact any school that you are interested in attending to ensure you understand their admission requirements for foreign students and you are able to meet the requirements in their time frame. Lastly remember to study or to work in the US without being a citizen requires the proper visa. Applying for a visa to enter the US can take some time to get and must factor into any decision you make.
